The Digital Content Library (DCL) is a combined resource of the College of Liberal Arts (CLA) and the College of Design (CDes). Together, there are almost 200,000 learning objects from many different disciplines in image, video, and audio formats. These objects come from a variety of sources including purchased and licensed, donations, and copystand photography.

Access to the online collections is available to all University faculty, students, and staff. The collections are password protected because of copyright considerations. All materials must be used for educational purposes only. Please view the DCL copyright information or contact the DCL at dcl@umn.edu for more information.

CLA Visual Resources Collection & Slide Library

The VRC began as the Slide Library of the Department of Art History, in the College of Liberal Arts. The VRC has holdings of over 300,000 35mm and lantern slides and 100,000 photo archive plates ranging from prehistoric to the contemporary, in architecture, sculpture, painting, and other media, from all areas of the world. The collection also has over 400 films, in a variety of formats, including DVD, laserdisc, VHS, and 16mm. The collection uses the Minnesota Art Classification System which was developed in the late 1940s by Professor Dmitri Tselos. He aimed to develop an alphabetized, non-numerical method of slide classification containing word categories and their abbreviations. Published in 1959, it has many variations and descendants. In 1999, the VRC started the process of digitizing the slides in order to support the teaching of digital materials in the classroom and over 40,000 Art History images currently available.

In 2003, the VRC joined the College Liberal Arts Office of Information Technology (CLA-OIT) and started the Digital Content Lab. It was established in response to the growing number of requests for the funding of the conversion of analog instructional materials--such as slides, photographs, videos and audio content--to digital format. Instead of providing duplicate equipment throughout the College, the CLA Infotech Fees Committee asked the VRC to supervise the projects in a joint lab environment. The Committee and the College direct participating units to adopt standards for digitizing and processing of their analog materials, and they also require the capture of information for all digitized objects. This metadata, if entered fully and in a consistent manner, enables the College to create a shared database of learning objects for the CLA community.

As of 2008, participation in the DCL is now open to all departments and units in CLA. Any faculty member or teaching assistant can bring their materials to the VRC (Heller 460) for processing. There are ten Digital Content Fellows hired each year to work on these materials. The VRC staff will provide training, assistance and will have responsibility for project workflow. Some of the participating departments and units include: Anthropology, Art, Art History, Classical and Near Eastern Studies, Geography, History, Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Medieval Studies, Music, Political Science, and Sociology.

CDes Digital Collections + Archives & Slide Library

The College of Design slide collection originated as the personal slide collection of Professor George Winterowd, who taught architectural history courses in the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture until the early 1980s. Under Professor Winterowd's direction, and subsequently under the collection's first curator Marcia Ohlhausen, the slide collection grew to consist of approximately 85,000 slides. Today the collection consists of approximately 250,000 35mm slides relating to architecture, landscape architecture, decorative arts and historical fashion. In addition to these slides, the Digital Collection + Archives house historic materials such as a drawing archive that includes Beaux Arts teaching collections that date to the 1880s, a large lantern slide collection from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and unique personal donations including the Whitaker Collection of early twentieth century postcards.

The DCA is in the process of digitizing its unique collection as well as producing new images in order to meet the needs of the faculty while promoting the use of digital materials in the classroom. We are proud to provide the College of Design, its faculty and students with both a digital and analog collection of academic materials that support learning and higher education.
